The SF Board of Supervisors just passed legislation that will increase the Ellis Act relocation payment to the greater of: (1) the current relocation payment, or (2) the difference between the tenant’s current rent and the prevailing rent for a comparable apartment in San Francisco, taken out over a two year period, plus additional payments for tenants aged 62 or older and tenants with disabilities.
The measure passed by a 9-2 vote, with only Supervisors Farrell and Tang voting no. The legislation must still be passed on a second reading and approved by the mayor, which is expected.
The legislation will apply to all Ellis Act evictions in which the tenant has not yet vacated the unit, even if the original eviction notice was served before the effective date of the legislation.
