The City of Alameda just passed a new ordinance greatly strengthening its eviction protections by eliminating “no cause” evictions! The new ordinance was passed June 6, 2017 and is expected to be effective on July 6, 2017. It is retroactive to May 3, 2017, in that it renders null and void any “no cause” notice to terminate a tenancy that was served on or after May 3, 2017.
The new ordinance amends Ordinance No. 3148 (Alameda’s Rent Stabilization and Limitations on Evictions Ordinance). Alameda joins San Francisco, Oakland, and Berkeley in having real just cause protections. And Alameda’s amendment continues the momentum for the tenant rights movement, following recent expansion of protections in San Jose and Mountain View.
